Played golf with my son this morning. Had a 40 minute Facetime with my daughter in France this afternoon. When it was dinnertime, my wife and my son's fiancee graciously let us all eat at the bar so I could see the finish of the Open. I am content.

Yeah, there is a new Father's Day rule in the house. I won’t be here. We will road trip as a family someplace. I’m thinking an overnight at a local minor league ballpark.

My family just can’t be trusted here. I have to put them in a position to succeed, and right now home on Father’s Day isn’t it.

This isn’t the first FD to go to complete shit.

One sneaky divorced dad dilemma is trying to get the balance right with the time you spend with your child on this day so that they also get a decent bit of time to fete the stepdad.

(I truly don’t mind, and I’m the one who goes out of my way to make it happen. He’s a pickup-driving, huntin-and-a-fishin good ole boy, my complete opposite in a lot of ways. But he’s gentle with my kids and never flinched about being a dad despite none of his own and he’s taken a lot of bullshit off my plate by giving my ex a project to focus on other than me. If he was a drinker I’d send him a fifth of Makers each year.)

Our kids were away at a church yutes retreat for a couple of days before Father's Day, so the wife and I took a day trip and ate some good food. On Sunday, we went to church, took a nap and I picked up the young-uns in the afternoon. We had a great steak dinner at home, and best friends came over for dessert and we trash-talked (somewhat good-naturedly) some other people.

Oh, and we're updating our will and we were going to ask best friends if they could be guardians of our kids if something happens to both of us. They agreed before I could even finish asking. Those are the kinds of friends you need.

Foo on Father's Day, I'd like to make that happen every year. With my kids next time. Epic show.
They usually bring out a guest or two and I would have NEVER guessed last night's guest.

Dave Chappelle. He came out and sang Radiohead's Creep. It was incredible.

That’s a great day. Drove oldest to airport on Friday to start his first post college job in a new town.

Had breakfast with youngest and went for swim with wife.

As we say “happy hallmark day!”

    I resemble that remark ...

Hope everyone had a good day with their kids/Dads. My son was back home with his girlfriend and we had a nice backyard cookout. After vegging out in front of the U.S. Open for a while.
