Harper to Bono: Drop dead

Discussion in 'Sports and News' started by Perry White, Jun 11, 2007.

  1. Trying as hard as he can to get people like our president, and Mr. Harper, to get off the dime on African debt relief - to say nothing of pitching it to the plutocrats at the G8 - is hardly preaching to the choir.

That's an absurd comparison and you know it. Bono's taken a ton of heat from the left for "selling out" because of his willingness to talk to and work with the Bush administration on African affairs. He's distinctive among celebrities for NOT preaching to the choir, for actually trying to work with the power brokers (even when the power brokers were not ideological friends). He's also relatively distinctive among celebrities in that he's backed up the talk with action.

Oh, and Pallister, grow up. The "shut up and sing" mantra of conservatives is exactly the same thing you're accusing Fenian of. It's funny how conservatives tend/tended not to tell Ronald Reagan, Sonny Bono, Steve Largent, J.C. Watts, Jim Bunning, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Osborne, etc., to "shut up and sing (act, play, etc.) when they became politicized celebrities.

Fenian...I agree with your opinion, and the same thing could be said about Keith Olberman. He's an expert at nothing except building a tv audience.

I have tons of respect for Bono and his work for Africa and debt relief, especially when you look at entertainers and that industry as a whole.

Well, he was an expert at finding mistakes in Ken Burns' "Baseball" documentary. :)

Guess Bono wasn't what Harper was looking for

Does Pam Anderson raise any money for charities in Canada?

What did Limbaugh and Hannity have to do with this story? I think it was more of a blanket statement that Harper was making that bending to celebrities is not his priority. i'm sure he has his own well informed advisors on the issues of Africa's poverty. He also didn't say he wouldn't meet with Bono, just that it wasn't a priority.

Actually, the discussion is about appropriateness. I am a fairly well-informed person when it comes to pet issues I care a about. So are millions of other people around the world. But most of us don't expect that if we show up at the G8 Summit that world leaders are going to stop in their tracks for us. Stephen Harper was elected by Canada to make public policy decisions. That gives him a mandate to be involved in the G8 Summit and to make decisions on behalf of Canada. What mandate does Bono have to interject himself into a meeting of world leaders, other than that he's the lead singer of a rock & roll band? He has no more right to expect an audience with a world leader than I do. The difference is that I don't have the hubris or arrogance to actually show up and expect the audience.

  11. Actually, the discussion became why-celebrities-should-not-talk-about-this, courtesy of 3Bags. My point was that this particular celebrity knows more about this particular issue than most of the world leaders he's talking to, and a damn sight more than people in our country who are paid to spread their opinions on the radio airwaves for four hours a day. The "only a singer in a rock and roll band" trope is laughable considering, a) he's been invited to address these people on these issues, and b) the amount of work he's actually done on them
    Do better, please.

Why does the PM say "kind of" so much? That jumped out at me.
