Herald to cut about 175 positions

If I'm not mistaken, Jeff covered both UF and FSU at different points at The Herald while also being the golf writer. It would be one thing to cover an additional beat that's in your backyard, but to have a commuter beat to go with the golf beat, that's just ridiculous.

Is there a direct flight from Miami or Fort Lauderdale to Gainesville or Tallahassee? I'm guessing that's a no, and knowing Jeff, I'm guessing he made the drive more often than not. The guy has little kids too... Good to see that kind of loyalty is rewarded.

Don't get me wrong, it's awful when anyone loses their job, but it just seems worse when you know the person who is getting shit on.

Yup, he was on the UF beat at one point, then switched over. And also did a weekly national college football column as well as a weekly golf column.

And to be clear, it has not been confirmed that Jeff is out.
In fact, I just found out that someone on the Pulp list still has a job, it's dependent on what happens with voluntary buyouts first.
    It's still a fluid situation.

Does this pertain to Phillips as well? I only ask because of the earlier post that mentioned he declined to finish out the weekend for them.

the people you don't know are just as real as the ones you do.

Agree totally Tom. Unfortunately, the bean counters/suits don't think that way. They just look at these people as numbers. I guess when we can get on here to tell their stories and shed some light on what the industry is losing, we're holding out some sort of hope that it might reach someone with a soul who might take more into consideration the next time they have to make a round of cuts. And that pertains to everybody.

    Worked with Jeff daily.
Lot of guys have talent, and he has more than most. But he has something else, too. He has genuine humility, and the bigger and higher you climb in this oversized ego-driven business, the more you realize how great and rare that second trait is. If you young guys came across Jeff, I hope that is the lesson you learned.

He was not one of the three names being floated.
If he ends up being the one, Rojas caved. Or lied.
Simple, and just as f-ed up, as that.

I know the Moddy pipeline is rock-solid. And he himself has said he hopes he's wrong on this one.

Well, there might be a slight crack.

I went to the Herald Web site just now. Round 1 of Doral has a Jeff Shain byline.

That's not to say he's staying on until the end of the tournament or even that he avoided the cuts. (It's like Fort Knox trying to get information out of there, understandably.) As mentioned earlier, I think things are very fluid and certain things need to get worked out.

But it's nice to see, at least for one night, he's still there.

And, no, that doesn't take away my disgust from the others who have been shown the curb. It's still disgusting. As mentioned earlier, it hurts more when it's people you know, people you've worked with side-by-side.

Well, since I did not see Mike Phillips' byline on the Marlins but FIU writer Pete Pelegrin's instead, I guess Mike isn't on the bubble anymore.

Pete is a great guy. His versatility is key when it comes to surviving these cuts. It's not unusual for him to be helping with the Marlins. I'm glad he's safe.

Hope MileHigh is correct. I remember Jeff from his days working for AP in South Carolina -- a great writer, and a pro's pro. Sarah also covers NASCAR -- another one of those expendable national beats, I guess -- so many of us are crossing fingers for her. A few other friends at the Herald who I hope come through this all right.
