You've hit on what I think is the key here: There is always going to be opioid use, just as there is always going to be tobacco use. Or drunk driving. Or teen suicide. But when usage is going up instead of down, that's note-worthy.

(This thread is a cousin of some of the YF threads that passive-aggressively note the number of gun deaths in Chicago over a given week or weekend, usually right after a mass shooting somewhere else.)

    If she smokes, she pokes.

Cigarette usage is way down among the educated and those in higher socio-economic groups.

African-Americans smoke at a much higher rate, and bear the brunt of the poor tax.

Opiod addiction, is increasingly hitting richer, whiter folks.

That's why folks care about one, and not the other.

That's a big part of it.

Opioids can destroy someone's life and family much quicker too, so it's more noticeable.

All those cases of people dying from second-hand fat just break my heart.

I guess you're blaming obese kids for their choices.

You are responding to an imaginary post. You certainly aren't responding to mine.

That said, I will show you more courtesy than you showed me and respond to your point. I hold smokers responsible for their choices. I just don't think they bear all of the responsibility. People who suffer health issues caused by second-hand smoke certainly aren't responsible.

Obese kids are basically "second-hand fat".

And, it can impair their health for their entire life.

The "why should we care about this bad thing when another bad thing is worse" shtick ranks as one of the dumbest argument techniques.
