Holiday Bonus

  1. That's pretty awesome prose, meat.

  2. My shop handed out $100 to anyone with five or more years of service. I've been there eight. They used to hand out Christmas fruit baskets, too, but mine would sit in the kitchen at home and go bad before anyone ate anything out of it, except for the candy. I not complaining. I still have a job and our health insurance deductions stayed the same. Things could be much worse.

I'm working, and my shop is financially stable. That's bonus enough.

But in addition, my shop has catered Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals, will cater New Year's Eve and New Year's Day meals, and everyone got a bonus of varying amounts based on hours, years, yada yada yada.

My previous shop also fed us on holiday shifts, and filled our gas tanks after a hurricane.

My previous shop before that offered a 53rd week of pay, but did little to feed.

All in all, I've been lucky.

For us on the low end of the food chain, a free meal means an extra $5 or $10 in gas we can put in the car.

That's it. Going to law school when my debts are paid down in a few years. I know it's another $30,000 in student loans, but shit, if you get even $5,000 as a bonus every year, that loan would go away over time.

If I had went straight out of my undergrad years, I could have been done by now.

Damn damn damn damn damn damn damn damn damn!

Not your fault. I was shocked to learn that lawyers make more than sportswriters, too.

It depends. If the purpose was to be a cheap bastard, it works quite nicely.

Or he got them at the grocery store. Several stores sell gift cards now, at my local Wiggly Piggly, some are for stores that aren't in the area. Never have understood that one.

My last paper gave me a company shirt. My first paper didn't give me anything, but my SE gave me a $25 certificate to Amazon every year. My current paper didn't give me squat. Oh, how I long for a crummy shirt.

Best perk I ever got in a job was free gas at a radio station where I worked right out of college ... they had a swap arrangement with a local gas station. Sweet.

In my next job, in Nashville, the paper let reporters fill up at the pumps they had for carriers and delivery trucks. The cool thing was ... no gas tax. Plus, the woman who ran the pumps was hot. Or so I recall.
