Can't forget how he used to let everyone know that by the 8th inning he'd be on the George Washington Bridge heading home.....

I grew up listening to him on WPIX and was mighty upset when my cable company stopped carrying it. Considering that I'm now regularly subjected to Tim McCarver and Joe Morgan, this truly is a sad day.

I always felt bad that he stopped broadcasting Yankees games when they wouldn't let him take a game off to go to Mickey's funeral. He said, 'Screw it,' and went anyway. I'm not sure if he ever went back on the air again, but I don't think he did.

RIP to one of the great personalities baseball has seen.

Wait, he would bail early when he was broadcasting games? Who would finish?

White and Messer. Scooter didn't like the traffic. He was home to Cora before the 8th inning began.

White said that they should have held the cermeony for Phil Rizzuto day on the G.W. Bridge.

I actually DO think of him whenever I hear the word cannoli.

"You know, White, I had the best cannoli from Rosario's in Hackensack today. Holy cow was it good. Everyone thinks you have to go to Little Italy for a good cannoli, but I gotta tell ya, they know how to make cannolis in New Jersey, too. Everyone should stop by Rosario's if they have the chance. What a good cannoli. I had three of them. Cora's not going to be happy.

Which reminds me, we need to send out "get well" wishes to Edna Lombardo, who is a huuuuuuggggggge Yankees fan. She's 88 and she's watching right now from a hospital room in Fort Lee. I'll wave to you dear, when I am getting off the George Washington Bridge during the eighth inning.

[/meanwhile the Angels hit two singles and Rod Carew steals third ... not a word]

"You know, White, there's a full moon out tonight and the Yankees ALWAYS win when there's a full moon out. [/pause] Did I ever tell you about the time Frankie Crosetti convinced Charlie Keller that there really is a man in the moon? Oh boy, that Crosetti was funny."

A part of my childhood died.

Used to love watching (and listening) to Yankees games in the 70s and 80s with that team of Rizzuto, White and Messer in the booth. Even when Phil went off on his tangents about canolis, pasta, get well wishes to fans, the old time Yankees, or whatever, I didn't mind.

When Scooter got to the pearly gates, St. Peter looked in his book and next to Phil's name found, in God's handwriting, WW.
    "What's that?" Phil asked.
    "Wasn't watching," said St. Peter.

    Ha, that was great.

My first exposure to Phil Rizzuto was on "Paradise By The Dashboard Light". We didn't get a lot of the Scooter doing Yankees games up here in Toronto but when we did he was always entertaining. Whether it was the WW or missing the action to wish somebody a happy 90th birthday in Staten Island or wherever he was one of the great characters.

I'll echo a few previous posts, of growing up in NY and listening to Rizzuto, White and Messer.
Great memories. Rizzuto was like a grandfather we loved visiting to.
I was fortunate enough to cover his HOF induction in 1994, it was a classic speech.
    RIP Scooter.

I'll add one more thing, I really hope YES finds a normal Yankee game from the 70s and airs it as a Yankees Classic.
