Stanton takes no risk at all. The Marlins pay full price now and take all of the risk. They do this for a player without even waiting to see how he returns to the field after suffering facial fractures from a HBP.

They are paying full price right now?

I don't think they got a discount on the years through the opt out.

Billy Butler to Oakland for 3 years, $30 million, according to the Twitterverse.

They'll have to bring John Jaha's number out of retirement.

I guess Beane thinks he can get the guy back on track but it strikes me as a pretty steep price in term and money for a DH who has regressed. Guess he may see some time at first base, though.

What was the competition for him? Who were they bidding against? I understand overpaying in the short term, but not the long term

3-30 for the second coming of Steve Balboni is obscene.

I read somewhere Kansas City offered in the neighborhood of 18 for 2, though I could be off a million. Think there's any truth to that?

    No.
They bought him out for $1,000,000 rather than take his 12.5 million dollar option.

KPIX in San Francisco reporting "90 percent chance" Pablo Sandoval signs with the Red Sox, and that he won't be back with the Giants regardless:

He supposedly turned down 5 years, $90 million, the same contract as Hunter Pence.

Ah, that's too bad. My favorite Giant to watch. But seven years would be pretty steep.
