He has barely 200 at-bats in two seasons since then, so whatever improvement there might have been came in very small doses. He has also been busted for PED use in that time period. At best, Cervelli is a serviceable backup. Even with the PED help, he never had more than 266 at-bats in a season.

He's a lifetime .278 hitter who hit .301 last year.

Will he be a total replacement for Martin? Probably not. But they could do worse.

Batting average alone is not a good way to judge a hitter. He's fine as a reserve, but to expect anything more at this point is ridiculous. As I mentioned, he reached 200 at-bats in a season once, and that was five years ago. Since then, he hasn't even reached 150. Part of that is injuries. Part is simply not being good enough to get more playing time. He has also been sent back down to the minors for all but three at-bats in 2012 and been busted for PED use. None of that inspires trust.

"The Marlins just gave Giancarlo Stanton Russell Martin money ... "

And there it is. Backloaded contract worth $107 million during the first six years. They are really praying he opts out. Or, as Olbermann points out, Loria may simply be hoping to sell the team before it hits his wallet.

With the way it's structured, there's no way Stanton opts out, right? He's not going to leave seven years, $218 million on the table.

If baseball's financial's continue to explode, $30 million a year might not seem like that much money per year for one of the game's top players. If he's still really good, he might be able to get another $300 deal over five years.

Yep. And if he falls apart, he still gets the $30M a year. He can't lose. The Marlins sure can, though.

There's no way Butler hits his weight next year, and he'll get 10 million dollars to prove it.

All kinds of things can and will be done before the opt-out. This was more about Giancarlo being able to strut around as a $325 million player.

The sizzle is selling the steak.

Almost sounds like the Jim Johnson deal, though that was a trade. Didn't work out too well, though.

True. But he's not going to opt out after 6 years, with 7 years and 210 million dollars waiting for him.....

    If I'm him, I don't give 2 squirts if we're 120-62, or 62-120......Daddy gonna get paid.

    Again.

    He hit .271
    9 HR
    66 RBI

    $10,000,000.00
