It was his fourth, but point taken.

No, actually that was Robinson's sixth season (debuted in 1955, finished 3rd in MVP voting in 1960).

I don't count the 12 big-league games Perez played in his first year.

It was Robinson's third season as a regular. He played a combined 71 major league games the first three years, spending most of those years in the minors.

But back to Heyward ... No one is disputing he has Hall of Fame ability. But to suggest his career is on a Hall of Fame trajectory is prepostous. It's wishcasting.

My most striking memory of Claudell in an A's uniform is him tackling Dennis Leonard during what I consider the wildest brawl in baseball history. Saw it in person at the Coliseum.

My memory of Claudell is charging Mario Soto, who at the time was one of the best pitchers in baseball. He also had a coke problem that was not so secret.

Went from the worst team in baseball to a perennial contender. Also, supposedly had a flaw in his delivery that the Yankees saw and thought they could fix.

My memory of Claudell was getting a CW bobblehead figurine. I'm pretty certain it was my very first bobblehead.

It was a big deal when he joined the Braves because he came to them well established...back during the Ted Turner days when the Braves were the absolute definition of pro sports futility.

if you were to rank regularly elected Hall of Famers best to last for players who began their careers after after 1914, Ruth's rookie season, Perez would be in the last 5. He's still a HOFer but comparing a young players chances at a HOF career to Perez is saying that he has a chance to slide in on catchers indifference rather than trotting home

Throwing a couple of more names out there because I love this "debate".

Roberto Clemente was a below average hitter for his first five seasons. Regardless of his defense, if he had kept up his first 5 year offensive pace, he wouldn't have made the HOF.

Perhaps Don Sutton - I'd consider him about average skill level in his first five years (but he was throwing a lot of innings).

Jetes' replacement is ... Didi Gregorius.
