    I've used Priceline (and maybe hotels.com, can't remember) but what's worked for me is calling the hotel directly 10-15 minutes after I've made, say, the Priceline reservation and putting in requests for non-smoking, king-size bed, etc.

    It's worked so far. (I just got a great Priceline price for a 4-star in Austin.)

    I saw a nice price on an online service. Called the hotel directly, figuring I could get that price and wouldn't have the money instantly deducted from my debit card.

    Wrong. The hotel told me they sell a certain number of rooms, and the third party sets whatever price works for them. The hotel held firm at their significantly higher rate.

    I think they are all in cahoots.
    I checked six sites today and all the rooms had the exact same rates.

    Rat bastards!
