If I'm Penn State, I offer Meyer Saban's deal.
If I'm Ohio State, I make the same offer.

I would assume Meyer would favor the OSU job, but I don't know what sanctions are pending there, if any.

I wouldn't want to be anywhere near Penn State after this. I almost wonder if they elevate an assistant with the plan to fire him in three years if he's not successful. If he is successful, then that's a bonus.

Are there any assistants who are considered head-coaching material that aren't named Paterno?

They can't afford to keep anybody who is currently on staff.

Mike Shula is tanned, rested and ready.

Why didn't Malzahn get a job last year? I know Auburn gave him around a million a year to stay but a HC job at a BCS eligible school pays that and the upside is greater. I know there was the whole Springdale to Fayetteville to Tulsa soap opera, the details of which I ignored. But did that make him damaged goods? Because Malzahn will not be as hot a coordinator until he has another Newton-like talent playing QB, which will be never.

Actually, Malzahn has pretty much made chicken salad out of chicken shit with the Auburn quarterbacks this year.

And he interviewed for Maryland and Vanderbilt last offseason.

Malzahn may well be doing a better coaching job this year. But coordinators who coach 7-5 teams are not a marketable as BSC champion coordinators. I would have expected him to have been on more than two short lists last year. Does he have excess baggage like Mike Leach?

If memory serves, he was asking for big money and I thought someone talked him out of taking the Vandy job at the last minute.

Malzahn's only baggage is being too new to the college game. He was coaching in Hughes, Arkansas in 1994.

OK, so far we have openings at...

    Ohio State
    Penn State
    Ole Miss

What other ones are expected at BCS conference schools?

Not a BCS school but New Mexico is looking for a coach as well.
