The Wayne Brady "Islands in the Stream" bit was far more than C-.

The first episode was an A-. The second was a B.

That made me smile, but not laugh, but why are Barney and Robin discussing this for the first time in the car ride out to the hotel and how doesn't she know this about her brother-in-law to be?

It's something he does at weddings. Why would she have known that?

Because Robin and Barney have known each other for 8 years and they are getting married in 2 days. Because Robin knows James well enough to be invited to and attend his wedding.

What makes you think that? He was married when Robin and Barney were broken up, and he doesn't hang out with the gang very often. There are plenty of people I enjoy hanging out with a few times a year but wouldn't invite to my wedding

Also, it's a TV show. They just started the new season. Yes, some exposition is required.

Is there a faction of people here who believe
    (A) "The Mother" has died at some point in the near future, giving Dad Ted reason to sit his kids down and tell them these stories?
    (B) In The Mother's place, Robin -- fulfilling Marshall's belief -- ends up with Ted instead?

That seems like a very small thing to nitpick.

Since we know that Ted doesn't meet the Mother until everyone else has, we're going to get a lot of scenes like that until most of the way through the season.

And it was a real scene. It was just set in the future.

    It's just lazy writing.

I also think we're going to get a lot of scenes in the future set at the Inn using the same technique as the final scene.

I just don't think that "B" is an option. And if it is, it's creepy that the kids and Ted still refer to her as "Aunt Robin".

As for the first episodes, I thought they were fine. I laughed at a few spots in each episode (this message board is a tough crowd). It will be interesting to see how this whole season will be done if its only taking place over the span of a couple of days. I could see that limiting some of the fun stuff that we've gotten used to with HIMYM, but I guess there is a reason why I am not a sitcom writer and the HIMYM staffers are.
