The footage was used. The Saget voiceover was new.

I don't care what the alternate finale was. F**k both of the creators of this show. Worst. Finale. Ever.

I'm inclined to agree. There were endings that I didn't like to shows that I loved, and while I went back and forth with this show a lot, I did watch it from the beginning to the end and thanks to the ending, every time I see that it's on in syndication, I gag.

    Yep.
At this point the only alternative ending I'd be inclined to like is if the gang were walking around the streets of New York, saw the creators of this show and stabbed them to death while the opening theme song plays.

I used to watch HIMYM in syndication all the time as well. I haven't watched any of it since I watched the finale.

I don't know what's worse: That the alternate ending was pretty obviously put together in haste after the reaction to the finale, or that something they came up with in a matter of minutes was better than the scenario they'd been planning for nine years.

I agree. While I feel like if they had ended it this way originally most people would be pretty happy, myself likely included. But to do it after the fact is even more of a cop out. Stand up for whatever vision you had, as awful as it was. I don't know who they are trying to kid with this. It's not like it will make people forget or replace the original ending.

People would have complained about his ending just as much if it were the original finale. They would have screamed about how the creators wasted so much of the viewers' time with Robin and Ted without any payoff.

Love it or hate it, I think the original ending was the only way to explain why we spent so much time on the Robin and Ted storyline. I think the biggest mistake they made was only letting Ted spend two minutes of wedded bliss with Tracy before she died. That was where they failed the audience because we wanted to get some sense of his happily ever after.

Ted should have ended up with Robin after all we saw, but we just should have been allowed to enjoy Tracy a little more before getting there.

The new ending was nice, safe and predictable and, as others have noted, probably hastily thrown together after the backlash. But if it really had ended that way, I don't think viewers would have been just as dissatisfied, possibly moreso than they already are.

No, this is the biggest mistake they made:

Everything else was so impossibly and ineptly fucked that there's no way the alternate ending would've been as poorly received. No chance.
