In my coming of age, 2nd basemen were the Steve Sax Trio and Billy Doran and Glen Hubbard and Bobby Grich, etc., all guys who were solid fielders, good leaders, but weren't feared, killer hitters.

Then Ryno came along and started to change things with power numbers. Kent is a power hitter's power hitter, and I sure as hell know I'd want him on my team. He may be ornery, but he plays the game.

And he doesn't take any shit. Ask Bonds. Who else has the stones to step up to him?

I'll give credit, sure. Kent has solid numbers and was a very fine player. But no one ever bought a ticket to see him play, and he didn't transcend the game or position (yeah, maybe it was bad luck that Sandberg got a head start on him). I will give him a half-vote for hating Barry Bonds. Actually, if he and Bonds could get in the same HOF class on one of those two-man years, that would be sweet.

That may be the year when one players has a "prior commitment." It'd definitely be some great theater and plenty of food for the media.

  6. Yeah, that would be kind of funny.

Kent has played a lot of first base, too. Not a liked teammate (hell, he made Bonds look like the good guy), not a fan favorite. Was woodwork the first several years of his career. A defensive liability. Slow runner. So....no.

Andruw's status as one of the top defensive center fielders ever gives him a chance, if he can keep power hitting and could boost his batting average. As for Vlad, lots of power-hitting right fielders with a cannon for an arm. To me, doesn't stand out as a HOF-caliber guy.

Andruw and Vlad are perfect examples of guys who need to be given a) time to complete their careers; and b) five years after that to reflect on their careers.

Baseball is filled with guys who had an outstanding first 8-10 years, and then staggered to the finish.

I think when all is said and done, it'll be very clear whether Andruw and/or Vlad belong. I don't think it's possible to know that right now, because they're not nearly old enough to have had a full body of work.

After 50 votes, the ones getting the 38 needed:

    Alex Rodriguez - 48 (6%)
    Roger Clemens - 49 (6.1%)
    Greg Maddux - 50 (6.2%)
    Tom Glavine - 47 (5.8%)
    John Smoltz - 41 (5.1%)
    Randy Johnson - 47 (5.8%)
    Craig Biggio - 39 (4.8%)
    Mariano Rivera - 45 (5.6%)
    Manny Ramirez - 38 (4.7%)
    Ken Griffey Jr. - 47 (5.8%)

Except for Pudge and his 37 votes, obviously.
