How much did you pay for gas today?

I'm curious as to whether the high gas prices have affected coverage in anyone's paper. Are companies mileage rates keeping pace with the higher prices? Do you try and stay closer to the office more often? Avoid long drives? Any edicts from higher ups?

I'm trying to keep everybody close to home. We'll still go out of town for the things we need to do (state tournaments, Drake Relays, etc.), but for the most part, we won't be going out of town.

$3.69.9 a gallon for premium. Forty bucks didn't come close to filling up the Cobra. I weep.

$3.86. Cost me $70 to fill up my car for the first time.

Because of this, I am giving up my part-time university teaching gig. The cost in driving out there once a week (and because SoCal has crap for public transportation, I drive 65 miles one way to work every day anyway) was canceling out what they were paying me.

My wife and I talked about it and I reluctantly agreed with her that it doesn't pay for me to drive that much. Besides, I'm now paying more than $500 a month in gas just to and from work.

Much of this is speculation, according to CNBC. Something's gotta give. If oil hits $160-$180 a barrel, the U.S. economy is going to seize up. It's already starting.

Well, it's another on the laundry list of reasons why I got out of reporting. Twenty-eight cents per mile wasn't great, but it didn't help much either. The last few months were spent mostly in town, and many interviews were done by phone. I shouldn't have to go broke to do a fucking job.
