So, found something interesting -- and depressing -- tonight.
Since the start of 2008, when I moved and started having a one-hour commute (about 50 miles), I've been tracking how much money I spend on gas each month. On average, and without fail, I buy between six and eight tanks a month so it's a pretty good gauge of prices over time.
I've already spent more on gas this year (about $2,600) than I did all of last year. I'm on pace to spend about $3,200 for the year, which is $650 more than last year and $1,200 more than in 2009. It'll be about $400 more than in 2008.
Near as I can figure, it seems like the root cause has been a flat price of gas over the course of the year. Instead of one or two dips down to about $2.50 a gallon like we periodically had the last couple years (anybody remember when it plummeted to $1.40 a gallon in the winter of 2009-10?), the price has stayed steady at over $3 per gallon.
My August expenses were the highest since the summer of 2008, when gas was near $4 per gallon, and one of only a handful of times I've spent more than $300 in a single month. Out of 46 months in this survey (for lack of a better term), I think less than 10 have been over $300.

What all this means is, it appears we're on course for the highest average gas prices in four years. It's trending downward a bit now, but unless we get a big drop in the next few weeks we'll get there. Like I said, interesting, frustrating and depressing.

The US is now EXPORTING more oil and gas then is being sold domestically, because the oil companies can make more money by selling deisel to India and China than by refining it into regular gas and sellig it at home.

Please remember that the next time you hear some big oil mouthpiece liar (yes, I realize it's redundant) say how we "have to drill more here to avoid our dependence on foreign oil."

Again, if you want to lessen your dependence on foreign oil, shouldn't you keep the oil that is produced here at home in the first place?

I paid $3.27 at a Speedway. It's funny how gas is no longer really discussed in full anymore, like people have just stopped caring or arguing because nothing is happening to change it. Sad.

It's like oil companies finally realized that people complain when the price spikes, so just leave it at one price point and bleed people dry. The price of oil has pretty much stabilized and held steady between $70 and $90 a barrel for most of this year, so that probably has something to do with it.

But we oil people are concerned about Italy's economy now. Need to bump prices again. Sorry.

$3.77 yesterday. And I keep hearing how fortunate I'll be to pay that.

It's fluctuated between $3.01 and $3.25 for the last month or two along the I-10 corridor between Mobile and New Orleans.
