We topped $3 for the first time today. When I left town at 9:30, gas was $2.97. When I got back into town at 4, it was $3.09.

Some of the stations on the south edge of the town were still at $2.97, so I filled up there.

$2.979 two days ago. Prices topping $3 now.

Perhaps one of the oil-and-gas experts here can explain this to me. Each year at this time, gas prices go up. We're told it's due to refineries switching to the "summer mix." Why is there a summer mix? What's the difference between that gasoline and the stuff I buy in November?

Summer mix is a cleaner blend of gasoline produced because of higher ozone/smog levels in the summer months. And I think there's a different, more expensive blend necessitated by even higher smog/ozone levels in the Northeast Corridor.

I remember last year we switched permanently to a 90/10 gas/ethanol split, and not only did our prices go up, there was talk of shortages. No issue with shortages this year, but the prices keep climbing.
