    We're at something like the 6th generation removed from slavery. I can understand why generation 2 removed from slavery may have done poorly in school.

    And, I'm not sure why 6 generations removed from slavery means you have it tougher than generation 1 removed from refugee status.

    Not at all.

    I just think Apu didn't let racism get in the way of him opening the Kwik-E-Mart or making sure his eight kids got a good education.

    I don't think we can ignore the immigrant experience when looking for solutions to what is happening in the African-American community.

    (And, let's be honest. Read the Times story on West Virginia. Poor whites in rural areas have nearly identical problems as poor African-Americans in urban areas. This makes me believe the issue goes beyond race.)

    I can't figure out for the life of me why black people in America are still having a rough go of things a full 150 years after they were ripped from their homeland and beaten and sold like cattle.

    Then you must be really shocked when you see Asians, who fled for their lives, become so successful. How did they do it?
