Whose fault(s) is it? How many black people are signing up for police academies in Missouri?

The deeper story is not what the numbers are, but how to rectify the situation by training more black cops and then making white-heavy departments more diverse.

 

I'd like to reiterate that no one here knows what it's like to grow up as a teen-ager in a bad neighborhood who is hauled in weekly for loitering or "mob action," when you're not being harassed about some armed robbery you had shit to do with.

Easy for all of us to buy into the myth of a nationwide battalion of Officer Friendlies.

But Nate Silver was once arrested by an overzealous cop, when he wouldn't move along when told to by a cop making an arrest of someone else.

Surely he knows what it's like.
