Started snowing here about 10 o'clock last night and hasn't let up since. Got about 3 inches on the ground. I've lived here 26 years and this is the first winter we've had two separate measurable snowfalls in the same season.

See, they should have held the Winter Olympics in Mississippi this year.

So everyone goes back to work in the DC area today and a Metro train derails on the Red Line. Wonderful.

Some of the roads on my commute this morning were great. Others, mostly in downtown DC, were absolutely horrible. As if they hadn't been touched, which I'm sure they hadn't. I mean really, really bad. One one street, about a dozen or so cars that are parked along the street are completely buried. You can only see either the outline of the car or the very tippy top of the roof. Good luck with that.

I'll be Metroing home this afternoon. Looks like the line I use (yellow) is on a regular schedule, thankfully.

Good luck. I was planning to go in by Metro at 11:30, until I heard about the derailment. I have to pass through Farragut North, so that would not have been good. I've heard lots of commuting horror stories both on the roads and the train, so I stayed home. I worked from home this morning and now I'm off to go see "Avatar."

I'll try to go into the office tomorrow. Yes, I know it's Saturday.

Looks like the high temps are running about 10 degrees below normal for the next 10 days or so, hampering the melting effect.

The average normal high for Washington in Feb. is 46. That would generally melt an awful lot of snow. The 35-37 they'll be having for the next few days? Not so much.

In a related story, the snow shovel I ordered through Amazon yesterday has shipped.

    Excellent question.

Anyway, the mistake is in the terminology. It's not "global warming." It's globally f#$@ed-up weather caused by climate change."

This stuff needs to melt. The last few days here have seen a steady steam of snow shoveling and accident deaths here. It's damn depressing.

Out of curiosity, was the snow the wet, heavy type or the light, fluffy type?

We had 14 inches here in my part of the country on Tuesday/Wednesday, but it was the light stuff and easy to get rid of. We barely blinked here.
