    I asked some questions about the beagle, Finn, to the foster. Among the answers:

    Is Finn his name, and does he know that as his name?

    "I believe he’s only been going by Finn for a month or so and he does come when I call him “Finn” but I think it’s more so my tone, mannerisms, or the words “come here” that he listens for. In reality I think I call him “buddy” or “good boy” more than his name."

    SHE CALLS HIM "GOOD BOY."

    My lovely wife today: "God, I hope we get him."

    Happy New Year.

    If I can build in a doggy door to my garage I might consider it. I can't have an indoor dog and I want a medium-sized one like a German Shepherd or a Belgian Malinois.

    Medium size compared to what? A Great Dane or Cujo or CliffordTheBigRedDog?

    NOW that she's on board, go for it.

    Never wanted to be the proverbial pebble in your shoe - that's only for a football game and basketball game or two in the Triangle (and even then, no flag planting attempts or brawls in the last minute of a game already decided) – but her being on board, IMO, is everything.

    Again, good luck. Take care ...

    Our five-month old doodle is hosting her littermate sister tonight and they are going on their fifth consecutive hour of wrestling and growling at each other. Not sure how the hell we’ll separate them long enough to go to sleep.

    My friend's stepdaughter did a Peace Corps stretch in Panama and came home with a dog. Friend tells the dog to "come." Dog does nothing. Tries again, "come." Nothing. Stepdaughter steps in and says, "venga." The dog comes. Dog understood Spanish. :)

    Well, this fucking thread is going to make it dusty in here.

    UNC, I hope you get Finn. It sounds like you will give him a great home.

    I will live vicariously through you and the other dog owners I know. I've mentioned this before. I love dogs. Always have. I grew up with them, but I'm allergic. I can't have one in the house. Allergy shots failed. Even supposedly hypoallergenic dogs make me feel sick. If I spend even a few hours in a house with a dog, I need a shower or I feel like crap. All that and I've still been tempted many times since my mother's Dachshund died nearly 30 years ago, which was the last time I lived with one.

    Damn, that sucks. I'm sure you've tried everything under the sun, but so maddening that in 2024 2025 this problem still exists when we can wipe out pet issues like fleas, ticks and heartworm with a simple pill.

    There are options. They just don't work for everybody. My daughter's suggestion is that I move out so she and her mom can have a dog. She still brings that one up even though she's in college and not home most of the time. lol

    I don't even know where to start.

    Our options through the Rescue today were:
    1. Meet Finn;
    2. Decide not quite for us;
    3. Decide we'll take him for a 2-week trial and plan a date to pick him up to start;
    4. Decide we'll take him for the trial beginning today and bring him home.

    Yeah, you know where this is going.

    He's sleeping on his blanket on the couch next to my lovely wife as I type this. Today is Day 1 of our trial.

    He was a little angel riding home in the car. Sat with our daughter, who's home from college. He likes looking out windows. Took him to our back yard which has a fence and he poked around.

    Took him for walk, err, run around the neighborhood sidewalk. He marked everything that was tall - trees, wire grass bushes, lampposts. He gets fixed in two weeks.

    After the walk he ran and RAN in the back yard. It was his first time outside off a leash in months. His foster didn't have a fence.

    His foster. My goodness, his foster. What a sweet, huge-hearted young woman. Maybe mid- or late-20s, she lives alone and works from home and fosters beagles. Finn is her fourth. "He's the sweetest, calmest one I've ever had."

    He's eaten and found his water dish.

    We have a ways to go to get him acclimated and finish housetraining, but we'll get there. He's pretty wiped out now after a big day, so we'll see how things go. He likes to follow us around the house (he is a beagle, after all). It's been a great start.

    We like the name Finley, calling him Finn for short.

    God, I love dogs. Why are they so good?
