I watched the space shuttle launch tonight.

    Just read the story on this in Esquire and recalled this thread. Great story, Jones. I could really feel the tension when the launch was almost stopped, the stunned silence on the bus after the launch and the optimism the launch inspired. And that photo of the shuttle on the pad with that moon in the background ... I wish I had been there to see that.

    Jesus Christ, that is some drinking if you drank so much on Friday night you begged out on a SUNDAY wakeup. I don't think I've ever gotten that trashed. :D

    Well, the next launch is schedule for Feb. 12.

    I don't know if it's a night launch, but the person who'll do the countdown is my sister.

    She has to give remarks before liftoff, too, and is seeking suggestions. Her description of the purpose of the lauch is "the payload is a truss to complete the power generating solar array." No clue what that means.

    Any ideas for her speech?

    Just have her mention SportsJournalists.com and you sister will live forever in glory :D

    It's the last set of solar wings for the ISS. Very cool that your sister is doing the countdown. I've always thought it must be hard for them to keep a somewhat monotone voice. I think mine would be shaking with excitement.

    I suggest, "T minus 30 seconds, and before we get to the final countdown, I'd like to give a big shout out to all the folks at sportsjournalists.com. You betcha this thing's gonna fly."

    Sorry, a little bragging post. I am a geek on this but I'm psyched for my sister.

    I'm now told some media person is doing the 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 part of the countdown, but she's doing everything else.

    Right now, I am listening to her at http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/main/index.html, on the link to the communications and . It's just under an hour to another night launch.

    I gotta say, it's kind of cool, especially considering I'm listening from Morocco. I just Skyped my mom, but this is really a bit cooler, even though I understand nothing beyond "copy that." She got the brains in the family.

    If it doesn't go tonight, it's delayed again until May.

    Happy viewing to those in range. I've never seen a launch, but I did do the NASA tour on a family day.

    Edit: Planned 45 minute hold right now. They've cut to media people, not her.

    My parents just called.. they're in Florida at my aunt and uncle's and headed to the launch

    It just went up.

    I turned on the NASA TV along with the "communications" link and had trouble following both broadcasts - one was a bit behind the other, at least where I'm logging on.

    I'm not sure I heard all of my sister's little talk. It allegedly ended with something like "strap on your visors" or something like that. I did hear her say "have a nice ride tonight" or something to that effect.

    She did refuse to acknowledge the SportsJournalists.com nation. Sorry. I tried. I have no idea why she didn't go for it.
