Iceland is very expensive, because they have to import almost everything. Hotels aren't too bad, though. Tons of little places to stay all over the country.

If you ever wanted to see the inside of a dormant volcano (and the thought surely never crossed your mind before now), this was pretty awesome: Inside the Volcano, Iceland Volcano Tour | InsideTheVolcano.com

Yeah, I’m sure it wont be a grand total of $99. But a $99 flight to Destin or Reykavik? .... no brainer. Even if it ends being $400 with taxes, fees and luggage.

Wife’s co-workers have gone at least twice - taking advantage of $99 flights - and plan to go again.

My sister went recently and another friend is planning an in-depth trip. I think Iceland is trying to boost tourism; my sister's ticket was a layover to Paris. There was some offer to extend it at a decent rate.

She had a good time, but like other have said, Iceland is crazy expensive.

We were flying to Paris several months ago, and I went looking for a flight and on the aggregator sites they were pushing these really cheap flights on WOW! with a stopover in Reykjavik. We were only looking for direct flights, and I didn't really consider it, but the idea of being able to say I had been to Iceland was a selling point! When we got to the airport, there was a Wow! flight in the same terminal. a few gates over. When the people lined up to get on the flight, it looked like Genghis Khan and his screaming hordes to me. Just chaos. I am assuming they were all people flying to Iceland to catch connecting flights to somewhere else? Either way, I could sense a very uncomfortable flight. And we are usually OK with really no frills when we fly.

Those deep discount carriers scare me, so we stick with the Americans, Deltas, etc. and the airlines in their alliances. At least they have more than one plane on the route, so if things go wrong, the inconvenience can be minimized. We learned our lesson a few years ago. The Ms. was going to fly to Paris without me, and there was this airline called XL Airways that did cheap flights between NY and Paris. She was willing to give it a try, even though she expected to be packed into a cattle car. The times of the flights actually worked really well. And it saved maybe $300 or $400. . . . The short of it is that getting checked in at the airport was a mess. They were disgorganized and their computers were down. And when she arrived in Paris, her luggage didn't arrive with her. She actually had fit something work related in, and was planning to head to Copenhagen after a week there, for a day, for a meeting, in between spending time with her parents. A week later, her luggage still was being held hostage, so she had to go buy a suit for the trip to Copenhagen. I know things don't always go smoothly with the bigger airlines, but since then, we aren't touching the cheap-o flights. That includes Norwegian Air, which flies to Paris. I scroll right past those flights. It's just not worth it to us. . . . and I am a really cheap bastard and say that. Just not cheap enough to risk having to worry that they are going to ask me to fly the plane.

My honeymoon was two weeks in Iceland.

Definitely go, and spend as little time in Reykjavik as possible.

The penis museum is not worth going out of your way for. Go if you’re killing time waiting for a flight/bus/hotel.

The Blue Lagoon is worth it. So are the Myvatn hot springs, if you’re in the area.

The food is OK, but definitely expensive. It’s worth it to make sure your accommodations have a kitchenette. Stores close relatively early, so you want to make sure you’re set for dinner before 5, or else your cheapest option may be a $25 fast food burger with fries.

Osteria Noa in Akureyri and Pakkhus in Hofn are two places worth the price tag ($50-$70 a head) if you end up in either of those cities and have the means.

I did the Ring Road with a friend and it was definitely worth it. Expensive, but not crazy crazy if you did things right (I ate a few hot dogs from gas stations). Like @jlee, I didn't think much of Reykjavik. That southwestern corner of the island is very crowded. There's a little triangle of sights there and a lot of people do that and only that on quick stopovers. If you get out of that area, you'll feel more to yourself.

At the end of our trip, which was pretty gruelling in some ways, we stayed here:

It was heaven. Lovely elfin family is the proprietor. Pizza, chocolate cake, a soft bed with crisp white sheets, the Northern Lights howling away outside. Really a magical place.

You're right. Cargo shorts are very cool.

    Completely agree.

The deep discount airlines can be a harrowing experience.

That said, some are pretty good. Some are unforgivably bad. Little bit of trial and error to figure out which is which, but that sector is so volatile they come and go like internet start-ups.

Great example is Air Berlin, which was a terrific low-cost alternative to Lufthansa for a few years. Hundreds of dollars cheaper on the same routes, but with good equipment and service. One day they just stopped flying. Kaput.

Iceland is interesting because so many European airlines connect there. Easy to get a layover. And IcelandAir is a perfectly good major carrier. They used to offer free three day stays if you were flying through Reykjavik on your way somewhere else.

Flights to Europe have come down a little this summer. So even a United round trip out of NYC to Reykjavik is only $311.

I once got into a brief conversation at BWI (Baltimore) with the Maryland State Police. Not sure what prompted it, but they were making fun of how bad Hooters Air was.

And no, never flew them, never had the inclination to do so.
