Several years ago as part of a promotional tour Brett came to a NASCAR event I was covering and I actually got a few minutes with him one-on-one in the media center. He was funny, personable and very, very talkative. Towards the end of the interview I realized that I was wearing a Yankees cap. I then "apologized" for wearing it and - in mock anger - he grabbed it off my head and threw it to the ground.
He smiled, picked it up and plopped it back on my head - then told me if he accidentally got any pine tar on it he'd buy me a new one.
That's still one of my favorite off-the-wall sports memories.

You wore a Yankees hat while covering a NASCAR event?

Actually the Yankees weren't racing that day so I figured it was cool.

Agreed. Especially if you didn't want to look professional or anything. Hopefully, you wore it backward.

Yeah, I guess I should've worn a coat, tie and festive hat like every other media member who works 16-hour days at a motorsports event where you head home at night smelling like gasoline, rednecks, Republicans and, occasionally, vomit.

If you leave smelling of vomit, you don't move quick enough.

Yeah. You're right. Every time I think I might end up smelling like gas and vomit, I throw on my Yankees hat. That always takes care of it.
