A serious question: Have you tried reading a real Clancy book or is it one of those books that's a Clancy book but it's written by somebody else. Because those books suck. The real Clancy books -- the Jack Ryan series, for example -- are outstanding, but you've got to start at the beginning of the series and you've got to invest some serious time. The first Clancy book I read -- Executive Order -- was more than 1,000 pages, but after I read that, I was hooked. I've probably read 10 of his other books.

I love Grisham books. In fact, I've read every book of his. I've said in the past, probably on the actual Books Thread, but whenever he has a new book out, my first available day off, I buy the book, go to a restaurant that has outside seating and start in on the book at around 11. I refuse to leave until I'm done.

No, I've tried Red Storm Rising, Patriot Games, Cardinal of the Kremlim, Rainbow Six and Debt of Honor. The last one was the only one I came close to finishing.

That's cool. They're definitely difficult to get into. Clancy's books can be hard to follow, boring at times, filled with too much details. I tried reading one of the wannabe Clancy books, and while easier to read, I didn't get sucked in like I do when I get 150 pages into a regular Clancy book. My only beef with Clancy is he has 48 different story lines playing out at the same time. I find myself flipping back a few pages to figure out what the hell I'm reading about, because I can't remember.

Is Clancy ever going to write another real book again? Jack Ryan has pretty much run its course and Teeth of the Tiger was pretty crappy. Is he going to create a new character worth reading or will he just keep slapping his name on that OP Center garbage and cashing his checks. (Not that I really blame him for getting paid without doing any work, but I'd like to see another real book by Clancy)

As would I. I wish he'd develop another character and build him through several books like he did with Jack Ryan. But that may prove to be too time-consuming for him.

    Generally love Hornby's stuff.

Thought this one fell kind of flat.
