In the NYT, Amy Winehouse > James Gandolfini

This reminds me of the national mourning that followed Tim Russert's death. It went from "Oh, yeah, that guy! I like that guy!" to "HOW WILL WE GO ON?!?"

Yeah, for a tri-state area, the Times should have had him on the front.

Still, young, hot and dying tragically will always beat out middle-aged and predictable (wow, a heart attack? Who could have seen that coming?)

James Gandolfini was very, very good. The modern equivalent of Ed Asner, perhaps.

That is funny ... considering the Times tweeted "a British paper" broke Snowden's NSA story.

Media types tweeted their displeasure that the Times couldn't at least credit The Guardian. Good times.

I'd almost bet they're putting together an A1 centerpiece for Sunday.

When you think about it, the story broke after 7. The front was probably built and shipped by 6.

Short of Obama dying, nothing was breaking up that page. They probably hold teasers for things like this.

You know for a fact what Sunday's A1 looks like?

They had a follow today in arts.

No way James Gandolfini, four days or whatever after his death, is getting A1 centerpiece of the NYT on a Sunday. No way. Not when there are mango shortages in a remove village of Congo to wax 80 inches about.

I don't mind being wrong about the Sunday thing (didn't know they did a thing in Arts section today).

But I did just call the Times and talked to a guy in the newsroom.

First A1 deadline is 9 o'clock. Story broke at 7-something.

It was confirmed by about 7:45 p.m. ET, plenty of time to make a change. They had a feature story in the six-slot that easily could have been popped out without much more effort than swapping the tease required. And the Times makes changes like that on a regular basis. They chose not to.

There's really a lot of truth to that...
