If it negatively impacted his gay teammates, he should have been punished.

Actually, it isn't quite that easy. The business owner can't say "Before I check my calendar, can you tell me whether this is a same-sex wedding?"

Again, it bears repeating that the Indiana law exists in a place with no statewide nondiscrimination law. RFRAs have been used repeatedly in attempts to trump said nondiscrimination laws, and Indiana's seems explicitly expanded from the federal law and tailored to do just that.

THAT is the real issue. Not whether someone should be forced to cater a gay wedding.

As you'll see if you read the Indy Star front-page editorial, even the newspaper isn't calling for any changes to be made to the RFRA, just for the state to pass stronger nondiscrimination laws to go with it.

Well, and we do see investigations into these kinds of things, right? They'll send in a black couple, who is told the apartment has been rented, and then a white couple will go in and they'll be shown the apartment.

Same thing with bank/mortgage loans, etc.

Are we going to start doing stings on cake decorators?

It's funny ... when I was in my 20s I was hauled into federal court to testify in just such a situation. I called about a place, the agent said they had an appointment to show it at 2. I said, OK, if he doesn't take it I will (I was familiar with the place and was distantly related to the owner). About 2:30 the agent called and told me the guy didn't show, so I was there within 5 minutes to sign the docs.

Turns out the 2 o'clock guy was black and was an hour late, but he was convinced they didn't want to rent to him because of his race. Perhaps that was true -- I honestly don't know -- but he sure as hell helped them out by showing up late.

Amazingly, he showed up at court 10 minutes late. The judge was none too pleased and told him that if he was a second late again, not only would his case be dismissed, but also he'd be held in contempt and jailed.

Sure, the shiftless black guy who's late for everything.

Not only did they discriminate against him, they used a negative stereotype to justify it!

Funny that he showed up late for court though.

We had an awards ceremony toward the end of my senior year of high school. Guess who didn't show up to receive his perfect attendance for all of high school award?
