Well, according to one of the dim bulbs around here the Constitution says prayer at graduation equals four hours of religion classes, so why would teaching religion be legal? It's still a public institution forcing religion down someone's throat.

There's nothing in the Constitution about giving money to politicians or burning a flag either. Yet both are considered free speech.

So let me get this straight: Though there is no official state religion in this country, the majority of people in this country are Christian or say they are (personally, if impersonating a Christian were illegal, a I think a lot of them would be in jail). For this reason, if a local school board wants a (presumably Christian) prayer at an official school function, any non-Christians should either suck it up or move to some other country?

It's not "harmless," Junkie. By having an unconstitutional act, they are taking a place that is supposed to be a safe haven from this type of stuff and turning it into a situation where an inclusive activity has turned exclusive.

I love that you think making a kid, and his values, and his Constitutionally guaranteed rights, feel obsolete is "harmless."

I hope they do those things too, if they feel they should.

He's not going to be scarred if he has to hear it, probably. But he doesn't have to hear it. That's what the law says. Sorry.

Look, I don't understand what racial minorities feel in a given situation. I don't know what a single mother feels in a given situation. But I sure as shit know what it feels like to be in a school situation and have to sit through a prayer, and while I just avoided doing it, I did get weird looks for it. And I shouldn't have had to do it. So good for this kid.

    Thanks, Waylon.

Hell, I sit through grace at my parents' house before meals. I'm not running to the courts because it's a private residence. There's a huge difference.

Have read most of this and I'm curious about something: why should there be a prayer at all?

If I'm an atheist, why should I have to listen to a prayer at a high school graduation, whether it's to God or Allah?

And Junkie's idea that people should just suck it up is patently ridiculous.

Want to pray at graduation? Mumble a few words to yourself in your seat and don't bother the rest of us with your religion.

If it's a public school, why does there have to be a prayer? Just shut up and hand out the diplomas. Fuck.

Is there some sort of non-religious prayer that I'm not aware of? I guess you could pray to your gym teacher, but that seems odd.

How about you don't have a fucking prayer? How hard is that to understand?

And if you actually read my post, I said I don't care whether it's a Christian or Muslim prayer. And I'll add to that a Hindu, Sikh or Buddhist prayer. Try and keep up

I wasn't bashing the right wing but since you brought it up, it's pretty easy if you're the spokesperson.

    A non-religious prayer?
