What's the reaction in the newsroom to the new editor? Has she made an appearance yet? A little pep talk perhaps?

She's been meeting with staff all day. I came into the last one a little late, a handful of people in the Zebra lounge. She was very subdued, a little quiet, quite a contrast to Ron Kaye. Aside from that, didn't get much of a guage, except that she loved living in Monterey and played Pebble Beach twice.

from what I hear, the subdued part won't last.

Carolina Garcia was by many accounts known in Monterey for poor news judgement and not being particularly employee-friendly, which probably boosted her stock in the warped minds of MediaNews shot-caller David Butler and his tool LANG and LADN publishers Edward Moss and Douglas Hanes.

Love her or hate her, Garcia's backround is truly inspirational. And let's face it. The meteoric rise of a Hispanic woman is something we should all feel good about amid this grim time in the history of American journalism, and the sorry way MNG treated Ron Kaye, a truly great editor and one of the last good guys to hold an executive position - especially in this stinkin company.

Read Garcia writes about her background and discusses media diversity in poynter online posting (via laobserved)

Good for her, I guess, but why should we all feel good about it if she has become known for poor news judgment and for not being particularly employee-friendly?

    I don't know her. I'm just asking.

Because she's a Hispanic woman! Don't you get it?!

No agenda is more important -- except maybe boosting readership, selling ads, making money, saving jobs, keeping an eye on City Hall, serving the readership at large and a few dozen more that are taking a back seat.

Funny thing is, Poynter most likely feels precisely that way.

When you rule by fear, it doesn't work, no matter your background.

No doubt. Point I was trying to make is that there is value to a minority hire in an executive position. Obviously, we all quantify that differntly, and many reasonable people see none at all. I happen to be against the Iraq War, and frankly I don't see much value in Condi Rice being secretary of state. Hopefully this works out better...
