Based on what he did with Dalton, I wouldn't be surprised if he took a QB off the trash heap and turned him into a respectable starter.

More likely, they'll sign a guy, like the rumored Sam Bradford, who's been around and they think "just needs another chance."

Which is great, if the goal is to go 7-9 every year.

Seems, though, that if you have come to the conclusion that a guy simply cannot run a Pro Style offense from the pocket, and it's pretty clear that is something you have to be able to do to have long-term success in the NFL, the ceiling is not high. The ceiling is already the ceiling of your basement. Gruden probably has two more seasons (at BEST) to show he's turning around the franchise. Why burn another year on a guy who you're convinced won't work. And really, historically, has anyone ever really learned to be a pocket passer after they came to the NFL? Steve Young, maybe, although he was forced to learn watching, not playing. Vick for about 12 games after a stint in prison. Cunningham briefly, but that too was after a long stint on the bench, and he benefitted from two HOF WRs catching jump balls a lot of the time.

Not too many coaches get a second chance at being an NFL head coach if their first stint is a train wreck. I think Gruden believes RG3 is toast, and even if by some miracle he's wrong, I sort of admire him for not faking it for one more year (at the expense of his own career, and everyone else on the team's sanity) just because the Shannahii made it work with Baylor's offense for 12 games his rookie year.

So, then, the flip side is to keep RG3 ... and do what?

Might not be a terrible signing if they get him for a bargain price. I think someone will overpay for Hoyer.

I wonder if they try to deal RG3 to a team just to keep him away from Chip Kelly. Send him to a wasteland like Oakland for a conditional pick.

If it were me, I'd let him play out the rest of the season, which would either A) Give the team a high enough draft pick to get his replacement, or B) Show that he may just be coachable and capable of running a pro offense when he knows it's now or never.

You really get in a dangerous situation as a coach when the rest of the players know you're putting a guy out there for reasons other than "this is the best guy we have."

If you're Gruden and you want to keep your job, I think he's best off putting a mediocre guy like McCoy out there and showing Snyder, "Look, we know McCoy is a nothing, but he's still more effective than the guy you gave up three No. 1s to get."

If RG3 plays and shows any signs of improvement, Snyder might insist that he be kept.

Have you seen the rest of the players on that team? I can count on two hands the guys I wouldn't want to lose.

If it was a franchise with a competent owner, I'd say showcase RG3 and see if he shows anything that might increase the chances of getting something in return for him, but you can't do that with Snyder.

Here's what the Skins will do with their first-round pick, in order of likelihood:

    1. Stay put and draft a safety.
    2. Trade down, draft OL and S early.
    3. Stay put and draft something other than QB, S, OL.
    4. Trade down, draft something other than QB, S, OL.
    5. Trade up, draft something other than QB, S, OL.
    6. Pass on the pick.
    7. Put the pick up for silent auction at RG3 charity event.
    8. Let RG3 make the pick.
    9. Give RG3 5-year deal, draft a punter.
    10. Draft a QB.
