It seems Deadspin is about to go guns blazing at ESPN re: sex rumors

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by KVV, Oct 21, 2009.

  1. Speaking of Deadspin ... I can not get onto their site this morning. Or SportsbyBroosk or PFT.

    Anyone else?

An ESPN flack said Phillips was fired because he could no longer be an effective representative for the company.

It made me wonder if there is more to this, something that ESPN knows, because on its face Phillips had an affair and his family was then victimized. Maybe there was a harsh character clause in his contract given past indiscretions, or he took some other actions which led the WWL to fire him.

A quick walk over to The Big Lead and it looks like Brook Hundley is no longer at ESPN, either.

Well, perhaps she can spend some time with some of our board's needy members over on the dating thread?

Others seem more familiar with Deadspin's operations; is it curious that Daulerio hasn't filed a post since 1 p.m. Friday, his roundup of the reaction to his campaign?

The background to the firing is interesting to hypothesize about. To me, either ESPN is finally starting to put its foot down on inappropriate or questionable off-air behavior and Phillips is an example/casualty of that approach, or he must have been disliked by some of the higher ups who saw this as an opportunity to cut him loose.

If this was someone they really wanted to keep around, they would have.

Gregg Doyel was on Reliable Sources? It's now clear to me the world is hurtling towards the sun.

He's on there pretty regularly. My favorite (biased) was the one he did on Twitter with Rick Sanchez. :D

Doyel's on quite often, and usually is very good.

Interesting TIME article with a snippet from a Nick Denton memo where Gawkerites are told "Publish first, facts be damned, let's push the boundaries of media."

Also, Howard Kurtz is such a douche I can't listen to anything he says without clawing out my eyeballs.

Gregg Doyel's gimmick seems better now that he lost the fauxhawk. Doesn't look like he's trying so hard.
