This thread was started just to get me rolling, wasn't it?

Meh ... just the title. ;)

Actually, I had a friend come back from a few weeks in Italy with the report that what they consider great pizza is a cardboard-like crust with some unseasoned tomato sauce swirled on and maybe a little Parmesan sprinkle.

That's not me saying it; it's what he told me.

Lol. He didn't look very hard. It's been a long time since I was in Italy, but I have distinct memories are just going up to a little walk up place in Naples that had pizza in a storefront case, any combination you could imagine. It was amazing.

    Eh.

You can find bad pizza everywhere, even Naples. Even New York City. Even New Haven.

    Depends where you look.

I've had decent pizza in Rome, Napoli, etc. But I won't be too opinionated about the pizza in Italy. Obviously pizza is not a monolithic thing. There are different styles, and it's obviously a matter of preference to some degree.

I will say this, though, since you made it about Italy vs. the U.S. ... There are no real Italians in Italy. I won't concede this point to anyone. The only real Italians on earth live in New York and parts of Northern, NJ. Apparently all of the real Italians left Italy at some point en masse, and they made their way to Ellis Island. And they left behind some flawed replicas of themselves.

Worse, though, apparently they require the water from the New Croton Reservoir to remain real Italians, because when they move anywhere else in the United States they morph into something entirely different.

Premise of the thread remains sound:

No one, anywhere, needs Domino's pizza.

    That's Sicilian.

Not to be confused with sfincione, which is the Sicilian Christmas pizza.

Or the Grandma, which is a Long Island thing.

    Did someone say 'pizza snob'?

    Lean into it.

Hey, pizza in Italy could be the nectar of the gods for all I know. I would love to find out someday.

And I've been THE overbearing pizza snob ever since I got my hands on "Goldberg's Pizza Book" at age 13.
