That's not even a competition. I wonder if the Butler coach is waiting around for Crean to possibly get the boot here in the next couple of years, knowing they'll turn to him.

Alford-to-Indiana may eventually happen, but he has been bypassed the last 3 times they had an opening, when they surely could have had him any of those times. The Indiana people that like to wax nostalgic about Alford being an Hoosier legend and how he could bring them to their former glory and how he's one of them, etc., don't seem to see the pattern here. Maybe Indiana isn't impressed by him failing at Iowa and taking New Mexico to a string of NIT appearances.

I would bet if Missouri or Tennessee makes the call, Alford will be more than willing to pick up the phone and make that move.

I thought that was Ledell Eackles?

I was there in 1987. Wyoming toasted Virginia in the first round.

“Not only will we win here,” he said, “but we’re going to win and win big.”

I'll believe it when I see it, Mr., Cooley.

Tom Izzo's lead assistant, Mark Montgomery, is now head coach at Northern Illinois.

I guess I don't jog enough. UCLA beat Central Michigan and Dan Majerle in the first round, lost to the Fennis Dembos in the second round.

Moddy, why didn't you say Hi to me that day?

I was a little busy explaining Virginia's loss as a 5 seed - to a 12 seed that was a better team. Jim Brandenburg coached that Wyoming team, right? Walt Hazzard was at UCLA?

    Yes, Brandenburg and Hazzard.
That was Brandenburg's last season in Wyoming. He parlayed that into the San Diego State job, where he failed miserably. Benny Dees replaced him.
Hazzard didn't make the tournament the next season and was bounced. He was a good recruiter but a bad coach.
The highlight of that '87 regional was Charlie Coles at C. Mich. He was a quote machine.

I can't stand Amaker--Pukie who left Seton Hall holding the bag when he bolted for Michigan and is now trying to bend the rules to win at a freaking Ivy League school--but in his defense he was beaten by Princeton and kept out of the NCAA Tournament by quite possibly the shot of the year. That Princeton kid barely saved the ball from going out of bounds, recovered, set and drained that shot, all in like 1.9 seconds.

Anderson's officially gone to Arkansas. Congrats to him on pulling a salary that far exceeds his coaching resume... but like I said previously, fuck him.

Arkansas had to get Mike Anderson. They'll EASILY make up the $1.2 million extra in salary they're paying Mike Anderson by the uptick in attendance. I'd speculate dwindling attendance was more of a factor in getting rid of Pelphrey than the on-court product (although, the two are obviously closely connected).

Anderson got overpaid, but this moment presented a bit of a line in the sand for the program. They either had to get their man or continue the slide into mediocrity/awfulness. MA's agent had to have known this and got his client a boatload of money.
