It's that time of year: College coach carousel!

Yeah, it's a horrible comparison. Billy had actually signed the deal with Orlando. This is nowhere close to that, and really isn't even close to Dana Altman's deal with Arkansas and a couple other coaches who have had second thoughts.

OTOH, the relative shittiness of the candidates is matched by the relative shittiness of the available jobs. It's not like we've got 8 or 9 kickass programs looking for coaches. If you're turning down Mizzou, you're pretty much going to N.C. State or staying put, as far as the big-boy jobs go.

Yep. Just by letting it get this close, he's now a guy who will at least listen to lateral moves. I guess he could spin it that because of this, he now has the resources to win big at Purdue. But he also outed himself as unhappy with the administrative support he's getting at Purdue. Don't think that Crean, Weber, Matta, Ryan, and the whole lot of them won't take that and run with it. It might work. It might not. But he left a big hanging curveball out over the plate for them.

I'm not so sure Smart and Marshall are the only options. If Mizzou could identify one dissatisfied power conference coach, I'm sure it could find another.

And then that dissatisfied coach will use Mizzou for leverage just like Painter apparently did!

The difference, to me, is that there's video to be used against Donovan. While all folks have on Painter is a tweet or two. I don't think this hurts him much at all.

But Donovan wasn't making a lateral move. That hurts Painter. Florida would have been OK regardless. But now the world knows that Purdue doesn't spend money on basketball.

I'm guessing Purdue spent some money if Painter is staying.

I could be wrong, but I think Painter salvages this pretty easy with one even halfway-decent presser. At the same time, though, he might have reached the point that the next job he goes for he better take.

Just got an e-mail (fuck you, AP) from Purdue indicating that Painter got a new eight-year contract.

Terms weren't disclosed, of course, but a lot of horseshit feely good PR bullshit quotes from Morgan Burke and Painter were, per usual on these matters.

To Purdue fans, yes. To recruits in or near that state who will continue to hear about it from Painter's rivals? Remains to be seen.

It's not as if he has a history of Anderson-like mating dances.

I'm guessing you forgot why Mizzou's Mizzou if you ever thought Painter would actually take the job.
