I like that hire. They need a veteran there.

Snyder went straight from Duke to Missouri and Amaker went straight from Duke to Seton Hall. Matt Doherty went from KU to Notre Dame. I'm sure there are others, but all of those are a pretty long time ago.

I know Memphis is not in a major conference, but it's a major program by any measure. Josh Pastner had not been a head coach before he got that job (he was an assistant at Arizona and Memphis).

Smart's crazy if he doesn't leave. Insane.

Smart has brought in some very good recruits over his two years in Richmond. The Bradenberg kid is a stud. He has an amazing overall game. Reddic and Haley will be very good as well and Theus will be a very good CAA guard.

Smart has recruited on par with Grant, Capel or any of his predecessors. In fact, he might be recruiting a little better.

There is no reason to think that VCU will not be a 7-10 seed for the immediate future.

He can leave, but life would not be terrible if he stayed.

OK, but weren't you the one who said in the NCAA thread that all the mid-major teams together had only one blue-chip player?

I'd go back and find it, but things are busy here now.

    Found it: http://www.sportsjournalists.com/forum/posts/3017433/

I guess the way you wrote that, though, you could claim it meant just about anything. You are sort of like a semi driver who takes up all three lanes of the interstate.

Where did I type that VCU signed a "blue chip" recruit?

First of all, I am going to assume that you understand that recruiting services rank players with stars. You have no star, single star, two star, three star, four star and five star recruits. No star are usually bench fillers while a five star is a Kevin Love or a John Wall type of player.

In the past, VCU has signed mostly no star to two star players. IIRC, Joey Rodriguez was the first "top 100" or "three star" player they landed. Maynor, Sanders and the rest were all two star recruits.

Well now VCU is starting to sign "three star" players like Brandenberg and a few other current sophomores and freshmen. Hence the comment that Smart is doing better than the previous coaches recruiting wise, and it would make sense if they are bringing in stronger players, that their success will continue.

Now notice what they are not signing; four star and five star players. Those are called "blue chippers."

So everything I typed was correct.

Smart is recruiting better than previous coaches.
They should have continued success if he stays.
They are still not signing "blue chippers."

Now, what will shape, and is shaping college basketball, is the debate of what is better for the success of a program? Do you want a blue chipper for one or two years and then start over with another blue chipper, or do you want a team of three star players who will play until their senior year?

Pick that apart if you like, but I am pretty confident I understand mid major basketball and see what is happening to college basketball.
