Didn't Larranga turn down some bigger schools a year or two after the Final Four run? I seem to remember them being a lot better than Miami.

I know Providence tried to hire him. Not sure about anyone else.

As Tony Kornheiser said, Larranaga is doing what all old people from New York do eventually ... moving down to Florida to die.

Karl Hobbs got canned at GW yesterday. Which area George will have the better coach next year, Mason or Washington? I have to think GW's top candidate is Mike Lonergan. Dude is a real good coach.

What job is better? We were arguing this in the office yesterday. Yeah, the CAA can get multiple bids, but I still feel that GW and the A-10 is the right horse to hop on, long term.

Locally, I think Mason is. At least right now. Better players, and better relationships with local coaches to get local players. Seems like most of GW's players are from other parts of the country. Plus it didn't help that Hobbs was such a dick that he pretty much turned off anyone who even looked at his school. There's no energy right there.

I suppose with the right guy, GW can be the best. But it takes the absolute right guy. The margin of error is real slim for them to fall/stay behind Mason. Lonergan could fix a LOT of the surface problems there and put them on the road to passing Mason. It doens't hurt the GW's new AD was most recently the commissioner of Lonergan's conference.

George Mason is a better situation.

Jim Larranaga left a program because of strong performance. Same cannot be said of Karl Hobbs.

That just means Mason is a better team. GW, with the right guy, has the greatest potential of the two. But they also have a longer road to get there.

Lonergan got permission to interview at GW. Gotta believe he's their guy. I was hoping he'd get a shot at Mason. Damn good coach. And from every interview I've heard, he seems like a good dude, too.

I know some people who will offer high praise when it comes to Lonergan. He's had chances to go to the CAA before and turned them down. He's been real particular about where he ends up. I'd have to think he'll be on the short list at Maryland in the next few years when Gary Williams retires.

Feinstein today wrote that Karl Hobbs deserved more time, and has the Colonials on the upswing. They probably are. But I'll take Lonergan over Hobbs all the time. He'll do a far better job of making GW into a locally relevant school, instead of seventh or even eighth in the local pecking order (MD, Georgetown, Va Tech, Mason, Virginia, American, and even VCU) around here.

Who in the CAA did he turn down and when?
