It's a response to the nonsensical conservative drumbeat about 'black-on-black' crime that's arisen in the last month.

One facet. In the stories I've read they've also cited high percentage of violent crimes committed by blacks. They are not making the numbers up to fit a narrative. They are using DOJ statistics.
Are you suggesting that the stats are not accurate?

    I'm not suggesting anything.

The author is suggesting that conservative opiners like Will and O'Reilly are engaging in bad faith rhetorical misdirection when they yammer about 'black-on-black' crime.

And statistics are notoriously slutty. They'll do whatever you like.

    Again the article is misleading.

It is in no way misleading on its own terms.

Forgetting about convictions for a second, statistics still show African Americans make up 12.6% of the population and almost 50% of the homicide victims, the latter number based on 2005 data.

Edit to add: The statistics show that, unfortunately, this is not a recent trend. There's definitely a conversation to be had about these stats, but not as it relates to the Martin-Zimmerman case.

Az do you think that "drum beat" as you put it was in response to those touting the white on black stats or was it just random?

As a follow up, what part of the stat that says 12% of the population commit 50 % of the murders is not accurate?

I'll say it again. I think the caterwauling about 'black-on-black' crime from white conservatives is an effort at misdirection in this specific case. It's the same empty notion that asks why blacks don't demonstrate against crime - which they have long done.

The stats you're referencing don't say that. They say that African-Americans constitute roughly 50% of homicide arrests.

Different thing. Which is why I posed two thoughts earlier.

How many 'white' murders are never charged? and

Do you think it's possible that juries convict black murder suspects at a higher rate than white murder suspects?

Az, using 2005 there were 8017 whites murdered and
7999 blacks murdered ( I guess there were no Hispanics murdered)

Of the total 16,016 murders what % do you think was committed by whites and what % committed by blacks?

What do you mean by the word 'committed'?

    Charges? Arrests? Convictions?

The court of common opinion doesn't have sentencing powers. If it did, Casey Anthony would be in the ground by now.

Wouldn't "charges and arrests" be one in the same?
