Not joking, seriously, there should be absolutely no question as to why one of the best benefits of our government was the creation of federal courts. A judiciary established independent of the local interests. Imagine if the Sanford sheriff/local government held all of the power. "Move along, nothing to see here."

First time I heard that audio on the Sentinel site, it clearly sounded like he said "punks."

On this audio, it clearly sounds like the c word.

Unless they tacitly endorsed "Stand Your Ground" and people like George Zimmerman. After all, the guy had enough calls to 911 to get five free sandwiches from Subway. So it's not like no one had heard of the guy.

Man, do I miss the halcyon days of Subway stamps. I ate free at least once a week.

Haven't heard unedited audio, nor seen a frank discussion of the alleged slur. What did he say (or what are people hearing)? Coon?

When my wife worked there in college, the rolls of stamps were guarded more closely than the cash register.

It sounds very very much like "fucking coons."

Slur or no slur - I don't know if it matters. The kid was unarmed, the guy was told to back off by the police, he continued to push it and shot the kid. It's not self-defense.

Dan, that Atlantic piece linked to a CNN legal column that says it very much matters legally -- it would be the evidence of racial animus that is needed to prosecute at the federal level.

What was chilling to me about the comments was how so many of those posting did so in such a fashion as to keep their comments from being picked up by whatever filters big brother has out there to monitor the activities of people. The way they used spaces between the letters of certain words or used an i instead of an l to "trick" the filters.

That so many people have attitudes to that level that they have gotten into a habit of doing this anytime they post a comment on the internet is what I find quite chilling.
