Wish the AP told us whether the victims were wearing hoodies or not. Or if they'd ever been photographed with grillz or smoked weed. That's crucial information for many Americans.

RIP. Sincerely hope that things don't escalate. What a fucking mess.

You know, it's really interesting who gets the benefit of the doubt.

When an army Captain murders his colleagues, people openly "hope" the guy's name is Smith or Murphy, lest people draw the "wrong" conclusions.

When someone tries to detonate a bomb in Times Square, the mayor suggests (hopes) it might be the work of a right wing militia member. When it turns out to be a religiously motivated Muslim, we're still asked to consider that it might have been money problems that drove him to commit such a crime.

We're begged to withhold judgement until we have more facts.

But when a "white Hispanic" kills an African-American, everybody knows it's a racially motivated hate crime. It was murder. An execution. We don't need to ask any questions. We already know all we need to know.

Interesting too, how this story was covered:

Iraqi woman is murdered, and a hate crime is suspected (hoped for):

    The husband is grieving:

Turns out, it likely wasn't a "hate crime", but was instead an "honor killing" (which is what no one was hoping for):

We all want to see the world as we wish is was, not for how it is. And so, we wish for certain outcomes in news stories that fit our world view.

Nothing on this thread has topped or will top those last two sentences for truth and clarity. The truly unfortunate part is that the people who wish and hope the most often make their living in a business that is supposed to provide objectivity.

I find it curious that a news organization would withhold the identity of the producer it let go for editing the 911 call like NBC did.

I was hoping his last name was Gaylord or Kuntz.

BTW, it was an Army major.

Keep lecturing folks, I'm sure everyone's taking notes.

The National Review Editors must have been sleeping that day when they let that column go.
