Xan, one could make a credible argument that the program killed ol' George.

Alums have told me he was strong as a horse when he got there; used to arrive at O-dark-30 and ask people "What have you accomplished today?" at 7 or 8 when they'd stroll in to work.

Amazing, amazing man to even take on such a project.

This, a couple of years after we went 11-1 and should have gone to a bowl game with Damon Allen and Mark Collins. But candy-ass Iowa wouldn't play us. So the late, unlamented Freedom Bowl took Texas and watched Chuck Long pass for 1,000 yards or something on them.

But I digress. Did a story on this subject 19 years ago for the cable station attached to our school. Our asst. AD at the time and our head coach at the time (Gene Murphy) were matter-of-fact about the whole thing. One of those you-do-what-you-have-to-do things.

Murphy, however, always has fond memories of his team's effort against Georgia from 1991. Ask him. The Titans actually had a shot at winning that game.
