Obviously, Cutler doesn't have the greatest attitude, but given all the horrible human beings writers come across in professional sports, the obsession with him seems a little over the top. His Bears teammates seem to like him, so he's got that over a number of his peers.

Who brought Rick Reilly into this?

    Oh yeah ...

I've said plenty about Jay Cutler the last couple of years. Not sure I'd want to have to cheer for the guy, but is he as bad as Reilly painted him? Doubtful.

I paint him as a less charming version of Tony Stewart, the comparison coming as a result of doing what charity work he chooses without coverage or adulation. That's his right as an adult, NFL quarterback or no.

He is probably the most hated player in the NFL. There's a big difference between that and being the worst person in the NFL, which he certainly is not.

By the players or the media?

Doesn't really speak well of NFL writers as a group if they can't stop stepping over themselves to fellate Michael Vick, yet Jay Cutler is somehow unacceptable to them.

Ditto Roethlisgraypenis, Leonard Little (though no one really mentions him anymore) and many other scumbags. But hey, they're a good quote, so whatever.

A couple of years ago, Rick Reilly thought Cutler was just shy. I guess he changed his mind.

Please show me what his teammates have said that makes you believe this. He might be "most hated" by guys like you and Reilly, but that hardly makes him the most hated overall.

As the horse aptly noted, there are far greater scumbags in the league that get far kinder treatment from writers. Cutler has never assaulted a women, abused an animal, been party to late night strip club misdeeds, or committed any crimes of note. He's never thrown a teammate under the bus, has no unsupported children, and does not taunt, showboat or pull any attention-seeking TO type antics. And he does more for charity than most players. But he's your "most hated player in the NFL"? That makes sense.

There's a big difference between thinking someone is a jerk and hating them. There seems to be some confusion of those terms here.

I remember something about Aaron Rodgers saying Cutler was a role model for Rodgers' younger brother...something about how he was going to Vanderbilt and became good friends with Cutler and really admired him or something...maybe I'm off but I think that was the deal.

They do share the same agent, or at least they did when Cutler was coming out of Vandy.
