  1. From the Chicago Reader:

And I don't think I've ever read a column quite like this one:

I don't see anything wrong with it. Mariotti ceased to be a writer a long time ago, trading it in for becoming a media personality. As such, he deserves all the slings and arrows he gets. He's a punk. A decent writer, but a tick-turd as a person. He cultivated this personality and is now reaping the benefits.

Have a problem with DeLuca's at the end. If Cooke said they won't miss Mariotti, then why did A) they extend his contract and B) Back him in the public fight with Telander by spiking Rick's columns?

  4. I think Cooke was in Jay's corner until his resignation and the way he handled it -- i.e., Cooke finding out about it from a Tribune reporter. That was the end of that.

The De Luca column was extraordinary. Had to be the first of its kind, here or across the pond where British editors love this sort of stuff.
But someone from the S-T please explain, if everyone at the paper had a problem with the way Jay did his job, why didn't his bosses order him to go into locker rooms once in awhile, or do some actual reporting? Instead they rewarded him with more contracts, more money.
(Based on the following pars from the Chicago Reader story, the perfect storm theory explains Cooke's actions a bit:
Anyway, he's got other things to worry about. Bad times have been followed by worse times at the Sun-Times, and Cooke had to meet Tuesday afternoon with leaders of the Chicago Newspaper Guild, giving them the bad news that the paper needed to cut salaries to the tune of three columnists, a reporter, a photographer, and five editorial assistants. Going by guild scale, the combined yearly salaries of those positions comes to about $580,000.
So when Cooke received Mariotti's memo that afternoon that said "I quit," he had every reason to think, well, that's convenient.)

And with all the backlash, does ESPN re-think hiring him as a writer? They'll love the hits at first, but after the controversy dies what then?

The significant thing about all this: It prompted H_Beat to break his posting moratorium.

  7. seriously, the sun-times could carry itself with a little class here.

mariotti acting like a "scorned lover"? the sun-times petulance in this whole thing, including cooke's asinine comments and deluca's column, makes one think they were being taken advantage of the entire time. far, far from the case

pretty much what wwdd said. stop acting like children and, if you really aren't that torn up about it, move on. if you're bitter, admit it and move on. but damn, that column is ridiculous.
