Mariotti went to Beijing to cover the Olympics and had a bad time, things didn't go exactly the way he wanted, weren't enough colleagues there to stroke his ego? Give me an f'in break. He got to witness, and write about, some of the most amazing things that ever have ocurred in sports (Phelps, Bolt, etc.), and he got to do it in a place on the globe most people can't even visit. He got to experience one of the oldest and long-lasting cultures in the history of mankind, and he comes back unsatisfied? That makes me sick.

And this shit about not wanting to drown with the sinking ship that is newspapers? Well, I guess the rats are the first jump ship. How about manning up and championing the industry's cause? No, that might be something someone noble would do.

A slew of people are struggling to meet day-to-day needs in our profession, and he was working from the mountain top, and it wasn't enough for him.

I used to have a modicum of respect for him because, according to Tony Reali, he once read a column of mine, enjoyed it and passed it along to Reali, and it was discussed in an off-hand way on ATH. Now I hope he ends up writing blogs for the Afgahnistan national soccer team.

Geesh, give me a break. Where's the perspective?

To me, that makes Mariotti a sympathetic figure.

I don't know him at all. I understand -- from what I've read -- why his co-workers and the people he covers don't like him. But this makes his former employers look worse.

"We knew you hated him, but we gave him a five-year contract anyway. Now that we finally showed some spine after years of bending over a table for him, please come back!"

Classless.

Michael Miner of The Reader used to do a weekly thing on Bob Greene, entitled 'We Read Him So You Don't Have To.' Surprised he never offered the same service for Mariotti sufferers.

Under any other circumstance, the celebratory comments and statements would amount to a crowd cheering for the guy on the ledge to jump, and breaking into song and dance when he hit the pavement. But in this case, given the public grief Jay gave his colleagues over the years, it seems a fitting and sadly-deserved farewell.

Actually, that was Neil Steinberg of the S-T, not Miner, who did the Bob Greene column. Steinberg did it under a psuedonym and outed himself after he was through.

If there's anything that justifies the money the S-T spent to keep Mariotti, it's the reaction to his departure. Love me, hate me, just don't ignore me. Mariotti must have mattered to a lot of somebodys if his resignation carried the conversation yesterday in pretty much every media outlet in Chicago except for Pensions & Investments.
