And Carol Marin and Ron Magers soon walked out the door.

How about because he gave a big "fuck you" to everybody still working at newspapers on his way out the door at the ST?

Venture to guess that Marin and Magers were making fat six-figure salaries for quite a while when they drew that immediate and impressive-nonetheless line in the sand.

Doubt anyone at the Tribune will walk out on principle, both because they lack the bank accounts and because they lack the cajones. But it really is a morally corrupt and cynical move, to shed real sports journalists one month and then to throw money at this carnival sideshow of a performer the next.

So what Ben_Hecht said above about a "complete repudiation" is spot on.

    1. Whoever mentioned $200k, that seems ridiculously low.
    2. If this hiring happened, and I shudder to even imagine that it could, is the Trib going to carry 3 columnists? Does someone get bumped?

  5. They have columnists now? I just see warm water.

I cannot confirm this; however, I've been told it's a done deal and Mariotti will be hired by the Tribune.

If true, it's a disgrace, especially, as noted earlier, the talent that has been bought out there in the last few months.

Hey, between that, and the hurricanes and the supercollider experiments, this might be it.

We should note here, for future references when discussing non-compete clauses, that the Sun-Times must have had complete morons writing their contract language if he can switch to the competition so easily. Either that, or Zell has nastiest motherf***ing barracuda attorneys in the neighborhood to shred whatever agreement was in place. (I know those things are relative Kleenex in general, but if you can't write one that stops a key player from bolting to the hated foe, then you are wasting everyone's time and money in creating them at all.)

Maybe there's some waiting period before he can start soiling the Formerly Self-Proclaimed World's Greatest Newspaper. But I've heard that it's a done deal, too.

Hope the Trib has used my money, well . . . because they won't see another nickel.

Not that I ever worked for them, back in my heydey. I did my typing for the Journal and the Daily News, not that GOP shillsheet.
