I put the over/under on Mariotti joining the Trib at two months.

    Any takers?

But he said the Tribune has a great future after saying papers have no future.
Nice, Jay, you made Ozzie Guillen suddenly appear smart.

Between the start of the NFL playoffs and Final Four... after is suck-up quote like that, it's not if but when.
Although if the Trib's lawyers didnt feel like challenging it, or help finding the loophole, that contract is pretty iron-clad.

Sorry 21, but that figure is just ludicrous. Without bargaining power, without a single outlet vying for his services, you think the Trib, while laying off people, is offering six figures? They could offer $20,000 and it would be realistic, considering Jay could use the news room for his ESPN ventures.
I've a good idea what the the Trib offered, and your figure is way off.

Still, they offered Jay Mariotti money. To make themselves look desperate, needy and foolish. To chew up what vestiges of staff morale remains. To give the Sun-Times an opportunity to really, really cackle.

They offered money to a guy who danced on the graves of newspapers a couple of weeks ago, telling anyone who would listen in that market and elsewhere that papers aren't worth, you know, the paper they're printed on. And now he's doing one of his classic 180s, because it is in his selfish-interest.

And the once great Chicago Tribune is actively facilitating all that. Pride has left the Tower.

I really wasn't referring to how much they'd offer; he's lucky if they came across with a sandwich and a subscription to VineLine.

I was talking about how much he and his agent would be looking for, given his somewhat inflated view of his value in the world market.

There are some serious psychological issues there.

  10. first comment on that post sums it up..bitching about the sun-times' smear job, then ripping telander? please. (that doesn't excuse the sun-times' hatchet job, mind you.)

He'll be there, but not that quickly. Maybe six months.
