    Did someone mention "SHOES"?

No. He didn't deserve what the S-T did to him. Nobody in this business deserves treatment like that.

I respectfully disagree. It's a tabloid. At least they didn't call him a douchebag in print.

Truth is still a solid defense...

Mariotti did. Act like a prick, get treated like a prick. Karma's a bitch. Payback's a bitch. Mariotti got bitch slapped because he treated the S-T like shit while collecting a fat paycheck.

I'm not a public defender. I only need to defend good people, not pricks like Mariotti.

How do you figure he treated the S-T like shit? He was their most recognizable presence (other than maybe Ebert) and really gave their brand a lot of national play.

Oh yeah, he also cranked out 35-inch columns pretty frequently. You can knock him for a lot, but the publicity he gave the S-T, and the productivity, can't be disrespected.

Sun-Times should have dumped him long before for the manner in which he behaved, the feuds and confrontations with co-workers, the prima donna antics. That they did not -- and that they did, in fact, give him multiple rich contract extensions -- invalidated them from kicking him on the way out. They only made themselves look like buffoons, because if the guy was such a problem, what were the guy's bosses thinking for 17 years?!

Individual employees act like jackasses all the time, either while still on payroll or as they exit. Companies ought not to do that, especially those clinging to some public sense of professionalism. Companies need to fire the jackasses, unleash their attorneys on the jackasses and leave it at that. The Sun-Times showed that it was what we think it is by engaging at Mariotti's level.

And if it really thinks the guy is a loser, it ought to waive its non-compete clause so it can stick the competition with him ASAP.

Yeah, he was Johnny One Note, he never went into locker rooms, he disprespected the profession by being a lazy prick who threatened to quit, he threw temper tantrums ... quite the model employee.
He got VERY well paid for all his hard work and he parlayed that into an ESPN gig that also pays him quite well.
I'm not jealous. I'm pissed. Guys like him have done more to harm the biz than to help it.

I'm not saying what the S-T did re: Jay was right and proper. I am just saying he deserved it.

Sock, he was all that except lazy. He was prolific to the point his presence trumped other columnists on "their" days.

I say he was lazy because he was Johnny One Note. I don't think it's that prolific to bang away on the same theme -- fire Guillen, fire this guy, fire that guy, the Cubs suck, the White Sox suck.
