I really hope for Mariotti's sake that this decision was coming before the Olympics. Just like an athlete should never make a retirement decision immediately after an emotional season, a journalist should never decide their future right after the Games.

It is too stressful a time.

I don't think so. He'd have to have been fired, arrested, beaten up when he mistakenkly ventured into a locker room or something.

Quitting, apparently on his own terms, doesn't really cut it, schadenfreudewise.

Is it strange he sent a resignation letter to the Sun-Times Media Group chief executive and publisher, but not the editor or sports editor?

I suspect the editor was pissed off and embarrassed learning about it from another reporter writing a story.

    Bingo.

I'm by no means a Mariotti fan.

But the jealousy and pettiness here about his quitting are pathetic.

Nobody else finds it interesting that he had an epiphany in China about the future of media? Yeah, because in a communist state where there is no freedom of the press there happens to be so few newspapers. As bad as he's been at times, that's the worst I've heard from him.

Lead columnist. Mike Downey isn't exactly the most compelling read these days, and Morrissey is suited for a backup role.

Jay Mariotti: criticized for the way he does his job, criticized for quitting his job.

"We are pleased to hire someone with Jay's knowledge of Chicago, its teams and its fans. So we're pleased to announce his hiring as columnist for the Chicago Tribune. Please note that the 10 people in the mailroom were due to be laid off anyway."

and FDP, Mariotti deserves everything he gets... talk about someone who has earned it...

All due respect MR, this type of comment annoys me more than said columnist avoiding face-to-face meetings with the subjects of his garbarge -- excuse me, prose.

So if we criticize him we're automatically jealous of him and petty? We're bitter about our place in the journalism world? Sorry, but I call BS.

You're assuming the poster isn't happy with his/her current job. What if he/she is and just thinks Mariotti is a douche, for the reasons stated above and for others?

I'm not a columnist. Wouldn't mind being one some day but for now I'm fine being a beat guy/takeout/GA reporter almost year-round. The pay is good enough for me cuz I'm fiscally conservative, I love the change of seasons and I love my multiple beats.

Don't care to work at the Sun Times or Trib. Don't care to live in Chicago.

Yet I still think Mariotti is a whiny little cretin who nees to sack up and face his subjects after he filets them.

Have met and worked with lots of big names when our paths crossed on assignment -- Ryan, Wilbon, Plaschke and the board fave JW to name a few.

I respect those guys for a number of reasons. I'm not jealous of their money or status, or, in the case of JW, his good looks. ;D
I just respect their work and they seemed much more genuine as people than Mr. Mariotti.

Sorry, but I'm in no way jealous of Mariotti. And if I were a journalism teacher today I'd hold him up in many instances as an example of how NOT to operate.

Mariotti comes across as a prick in his columns and elsewhere, but I just don't see criticizing someone for quitting a job, whatever that job or whoever that person may be. If you don't want to be working there, by all means quit and I won't resent it.
