There was a fine line between his movies that were dumb and fun and ones that were just unwatchable.

I think it was everything before Street Fighter vs. every thing after Street Fighter.

He was great in JCVD, and as the bad guy in Expendables 2.

My stepdad used to take me to Dennis Alexio fights in Reno and Tahoe when I was in junior high and high school and Alexio played JCVD's brother who gets injured in Kickboxer. For awhile before Kickboxer came out, he was introduced as "Star of Kickboxer, Dennis Alexio" which is accurate, but a bit misleading. That was how I found out about Van Damme.

Very true, but it was the decade plus in between when he was making the hockey movie and The Quest and about a dozen other movies that had lost their guilty pleasure charm.

I love this thread. JCVD is/was awesome and I think Mizzou nailed it with Streetfighter being the Mendoza line on his movies.

Thank-You Huggy for the "THERES 2 OF THEM" reference. This line still gets repeated at some point whenever I get together with a bunch of my hometown crew.

I think I told the story on the brush with gretaness thread. I had a pretty funny evening of interactions with JCVD when I was working as a bouncer in Australia and he spent the night in our club when Streetfighter finished filming.

Amongst other things that night he called someone who was mouthing off to him "a Saturday night champion" Another term that is fun to use to this day.

I think with Streetfighter it became apparent that he took himself pretty seriously, and how can you put out films like his and take yourself seriously? We used to get drunk and go to the theater and scream out comments during the film like we were watching MST3000. I remember at Nowhere to Run, when he walks up to the counter and says, "Do you like pink flamingos?" I don't think I stopped laughing the entire movie.

I remember when we saw The Quest, I looked over at one of my friends and he said, "I got nothing... This is fucking horrendous..."

I think between JCVD, Expendables 2 and this commercial, I think he gets it now.
