In all seriousness, four HOF voters PM'ed me and told me that after reading this thread, they wish they could have their Grich vote back. One of them called it "the shame of my career, after reading your thread." This is a guy who has covered MLB for four decades-plus. Top of his profession. It was never my intent to put a dark cloud over someone's life's work. But the truth is the truth, and I'm grateful that he understands that, even though I feel awful about it.

I'm a little late to the debate, but let me say this about that:

Leech (not leach) therapy had absolute medical benefits back in the day and even today.

    What Is Leech Therapy?

Hope we finally cleared that up.

We really need a thread on the Hall of Fame prospects of Tommy Leach.

    A. good hall of fame case is like building a car. OPS+ is a great tool, but it is only one tool. And it is flawed. Just look at the all -time rankings.

A guy named Dave Orr is 13th all time, Joey Votto is 18, Elmer flick is 36, Kevin Mitchell is tied with mike piazza in the mid 60s, Jeff Heath is 80 something, Darryl Strawberry is at 90 -- 20 spots ahead of Ken Griffey, Jr., who is tied with Gene Tenace, Roberto Clemente is tied with Greg luzinski and mike Epstein, an early 1900s second baseman named danny Murphy is tied with grich.

So it becomes a case of if ops+ shows that grich is deserving than baseball as we have understood it and followed it must be almost completely wrong since it shows all of these other facts. Or maybe ops+ is deeply flawed.

I wonder if this might be why I called it an imperfect thumbnail sketch?

You're the very best at informative contrarian posts. Who knew leechin had been getting a bad rap all these years? The damndest shit you can learn around here.

Absolutely. There are problems with OPS, not least of all that slugging percentage values total bases as if a double is twice as valuable as a single, etc., when it actually doesn't work out that way in practice.

I'm also curious about the OPS distribution curve today as compared to prior eras. I would bet more players cluster around the median today.
