The thing is, when Tony posts about journalism and sports, he proves himself to be intelligent and thoughtful. But when he posts about politics, it's just talking points. Verbatim.

Part of me thinks that he's just playing a character and pushing out buttons. But he would have to consume a lot of right-wing media just to fuck with us. Because some of the nuggets he drops are fairly obscure. But then the other part of me thinks: He's too smart to just lap this stuff up and think it'll fly as real arguments around here.

Last year Arizona congressman Trent Franks was interviewed outside the Capitol and asked about the birth certificate. He said the whole thing was absurd, there's no question the President is an American citizen, and people should focus on real issues instead of this nonsense.

Less than a week later he held a town hall in his district, which is mostly tumbleweeds and survivalists. He was asked about the birth certificate and told the group that he had very deep concerns and that we definitely needed a thorough investigation.

Obama's mother was an American citizen. Whether Obama was physically born in Hawaii, Moscow, Kenya, or Buenos Aires, Obama is a US Citizen. He is not a naturalized citizen, which would make him ineligible to become president but not Senator or Congressman.

Obama is a US citizen. End of story.

Yeah, but he was born in Hawaii. So, we might as well stipulate that.

The fact that there are people still debating this confirms my belief that American politics is batshit crazy.

So saying that the media were not interested at all in reporting on his radical ties and his life of non-accomplishment makes one a birther? Seriously?
